Join us!

We would welcome new members to join the Health & Urbanization Lab! If you're passionate about environmental justice and equity within the context of urban development—and you enjoy working with quantitative methods—reach out to a current member of the lab. We're happy to speak with you about studying urbanization and environmental health at the graduate level in our lab. In general, our lab values:

1. Interdisciplinary Integration
We draw on knowledge and skills from a wide range of fields, including geography, environmental science, epidemiology, urban planning, GIS, remote sensing, global and regional environmental change, and social sciences. We believe collaborating across social and physical sciences is essential to understanding and fostering more sustainable urban environments.

2. Respect, Equity, and Inclusion
Every member brings a unique background and perspective, and that diversity is essential to advancing excellence in environmental health. We value equity and are mindful of the societal structures that have historically marginalized communities—this includes, but is not limited to, racial, sexual, and income minorities, Indigenous groups, immigrants, and first-generation. We strive to build a lab culture where everyone feels respected, welcomed, and empowered.

3. Time
We recognize that time is both limited and valuable. Our lab sets strong, strategic goals for both individual and group work. While our meeting time is limited, we value self-driven and intentional meetings that support productive collaboration. Each lab member hosts one meeting per quarter to discuss their research, and we also discuss one professional development technique and one research-related skill each quarter. Most students in the lab complete their MS or PhD within four years, though some may extend to a fifth year to acquire new skills in the lab and classroom.

Role

Prospective Graduate Students

If you are interested in joining my lab as a graduate student, please look at the Research and Publications sections of this website to learn about our current research and see how they align with yours. Please include your CV, a brief statement of why you want to join our lab, skills that you can contribute to our lab, and your primary goals during your graduate career in the email.

Prospective undergraduates or interns

We currently do not have any paid RA positions available. However, the lab offers periodic unpaid research opportunities for exceptional undergraduates. You must be able to commit to at least 6 hours of work in the lab for at least two quarters. Research opportunities vary but can include coding, collecting, and analyzing data. Interns will work closely with one of our lab members. Please explore our website and send us an email with your unofficial transcripts, expected graduation date, major, prior lab experience, and what you hope to gain from working in the lab.

Prospective postdoctoral researchers

We are hiring! Please see the job description here. Alternatively, you may explore funding opportunities from NSF, the UW Population Health Initiative, the Fulbright Program, and organizations and agencies.
